I have such a love hate relationship with Valentine’s Day. I’ve never been one to celebrate it with a boy – ewwwwww! All the red, hearts, candy and stuffed bears make me queasy. Instead, I’ve crafted cute cards for my girlfriends or gotten together to watch silly girly movies at night over cocktails = waaaaaay better in my opinion!
However, a holiday based on love rings important in my industry and, I will admit, gives me a chance to put together some awfully cute inspiration.
It all started when my friend and former bride, Katy Skelton, sent me a couple of small items from her line to photograph. Katy is an amazing furniture designer in Brooklyn who specializes in all things eco-friendly and sustainable. Her designs are chic, modern and timeless and appeal to an array of different styles or tastes. I love them. Her arrow blanket gave me the kick in the pants I needed to create something for Valentine’s Day.
Of course I called on Audrey of French Knot Studios and together we wanted to create something that was sort of a breath of fresh air from all the sugary sweetness of the Valentine’s Day norm. No pink and red hearts here!
Continuing with the arrow theme, we created a cozy breakfast in bed alternative to fighting for a table on the busiest restaurant night of the year…..something that appeals to the couple that would rather stay in and snuggle – doesn’t that sound nice!? Below are step by step guides on how to surprise your honey with breakfast in bed – use it for any gift giving holiday, surprise proposal or just to be sweet on any random day.
A big thank you to Swooned Magazine for featuring this shoot last week!
Step 1: hang some simple decorations – Audrey used the new Cricut machine to create these arrows and Love Nest banner (visit the Swooned Magazine feature to download the PDF of this banner so you can DIY!)
Step 2: pick out a GREAT gift – something that you know your girl or guy actually wants and will use. Satchel is a great resource for this – she custom makes leather accessories such as bags, clutches, wallets, coozies, guitar straps and more! Use the arrows as gift tags!Step 3: Play some romantic tunes and spruce up the house with a few fresh flowers. We found ours at Whole Foods. We loved this Fucking Lovely print by Lerin Chase Turberville!Step 4: Create a yummy cocktail (or two) for your honey. Recipes below!
