5 Tips to Prepare For Your Senior Session

As a photographer, I love to be able to shoot so many of life’s moments. Sometimes that means I get to shoot engagements and weddings. Other times, it’s senior and family sessions! Molly lives in Atlanta, but her family vacations every summer on Hilton Head Island. She is a high school senior, so we took advance of her family’s trip and did her senior session on the beach. It was such a fun session, from her bold red dress, sunset portraits. I know that as a senior, senior sessions are such an important part of your final year in High School. But, I also know it can be overwhelming! This might be your first time in front of a professional’s camera. So, to help make this time easier (and more fun!) I wanted to share my top 5 tips to prepare for your senior session.

What to wear

When picking your outfit, I recommend having 2 looks. This way you can get one that’s more formal, another more casual. I also recommend choosing clothing with movement! Molly wore a gorgeous red dress, that billowed in the wind and made for some pretty incredible portraits. It also gives you something to do with your hands! Plus, it adds such a touch of whimsy. When it comes to the outfit, solids are the best choice. Patterns can be too busy! Solids photograph the best and create a timeless element. Also, avoid overly trendy items. But accessorize! Bring your favorite hat or fun sunglasses. Anything to show off your personality!

Pick a fun location

Senior sessions don’t have to just be in studios! I love to shoot my seniors outside, at places they love. The beach is always a great option since we get some gorgeous sunsets, and it’s a unique backdrop. We can also do your portraits downtown, in Savannah, Athens, or Atlanta! If you want an urban vibe, we can focus on River Street in Savannah, close to the new hotels. Or, if you want a more casual southern feel, the Spanish moss all around downtown Savannah is the perfect spot. We can work together to pick the perfect spot.

Trust your photographer

While this might be your first experience behind the camera, we know exactly how to make you feel comfortable and at ease. We have years of experience working with couples, families, and seniors. During your session will guide you through the entire time, so you can feel completely comfortable, and have fun! We will give you prompts and poses that feel natural, fun and like you!

Bring Props

You can always bring items to the session that show off your interests. This can be things like your favorite book, a basketball, your jersey – whatever expresses you!

Pamper Yourself

Also, use this as an opportunity to get pampered with professional hair and makeup if you can! Professional makeup can make you feel extra confident and looks great in camera. This is such a fun time to celebrate, so why not add some pampering in! Don’t forget a mani/pedi, even if it’s DIY!
