Family Session on Hilton Head

One of my favorite types of family sessions that I love the opportunity to do is multi-generational. The whole extended Benson family came together for this family session on Hilton Head! My connection was through Megan and Justin who are a past bride and groom of mine. I got to photograph their wedding on St. Simon’s Island at the King and Prince. It was so wonderful to see this big family together after they had been separated for so long by Covid.

The family all got together this summer on Hilton Head to celebrate several milestones. Megan’s sister had a new baby during Covid who had recently turned a year old. It was actually the first time everyone was meeting her! It was so adorable. Plus, Megan’s mom had just turned 65, and there were also several wedding anniversaries. This family session was just a huge, loving celebration.

Coordinating Outfits for Multi-generational Photo Shoots

It can be so daunting to try and put together outfits when you’re dealing with such a large group. You want everyone to complement each other. Our biggest tip is to stick with neutrals such as white, cream, khaki, chambray, light gray. and pastels. These always photograph light and fresh, so wearing neutrals ensures everyone looks great together. The Benson family chose a color palette of white, cream, and soft blue, which was perfect for this session! These colors coordinate so well, and they always look good against green outdoor backdrops. The guys wore khaki and soft blue shorts with white and blue shirts while the women each wore a white or light blue dress.

We also recommend keeping patterns to a minimum. For their family session, the only pattern was the blue and white stripes that the kids wore. This helped add some fun texture, without being too busy! Overall, everyone just looked so perfect next to each other, and so, the photos came out great!

I’m so glad I got to be a part of this celebration of family! I just loved working on this family session on Hilton Head, and it was great to see Megan and Justin again and meet their family. If you’d love to have your own family session, I would love to hear from you!
