If you have been following along since the beginning, you already know Max. We welcomed him into our Athens studio as a fresh, sleepy newborn, and we documented those early days in one of our favorite sessions of that year. Now he is back, and he brought the dog again, and everything about this sitter session reminded us exactly why the Baby’s First Year Collective is one of the most meaningful things we offer as an Athens baby photographer.
This is the chapter where babies become themselves. The newborn stage is soft and still and sacred in its own way, but the sitter stage is where personality arrives. Where curiosity shows up in every expression and the world becomes endlessly interesting. Max at this milestone was all of that and more, and we are so glad we were there to document it with intention.

A sitter session, sometimes called a six-month session, takes place once your baby has developed the ability to sit independently, typically somewhere between five and eight months. It is the second milestone in our Baby’s First Year Collective, falling between the newborn session and the one-year celebration, and it captures a stage of your baby’s development that is genuinely unlike any other.

At this point, babies are alert and interactive in a way they simply are not in the newborn stage. They hold eye contact. They respond to voices. They reach for things and react to the world around them with wide-eyed wonder. They have started to show you who they are going to be, and that quality of presence translates into imagery that is rich, expressive, and completely irreplaceable.
We photograph every sitter session with the same editorial intention and full-service care we bring to every milestone in the collective. Every frame is created with a finished heirloom in mind, which means we are not just documenting where your baby is right now. We are creating artwork that will sit alongside the newborn images and the one-year images in a beautifully unified album that tells the complete first-year story.
One of the things we love most about the Baby’s First Year Collective is what it does for a family over time. Liz and Zach first came to us as bride and groom. We photographed their wedding and watched their love story unfold from there. When Max arrived, they came back to the studio for his newborn session, and they came back again for this one. Their dog came back too, because of course he did, and we would not have had it any other way.

We are completely dog-friendly here, and we mean that wholeheartedly. Pets are family members, and they belong in these portraits. There is something about a baby and a dog sharing a frame that captures a particular kind of ordinary magic, the kind that you want to hold onto long after that stage of life has passed. Max’s session had plenty of those moments, and every one of them is now part of his first-year story.
What struck us most about this sitter session was watching Max interact with the people and the animal he loves most in the world. The way he reached. The way he looked. The way the whole room felt completely at ease. That ease does not happen by accident. It is built through familiarity with our studio, with our process, and with the kind of full-service experience that means a family walks in already knowing they are cared for.
The Baby’s First Year Collective is built around a simple but profound idea: the first year of your baby’s life deserves to be documented completely, not in a single session, but across every milestone that matters. The newborn stage. The sitter stage. The one-year celebration. Three sessions. One cohesive visual story. And ultimately, a fine art album that preserves all of it as the heirloom it deserves to be.

One of the most meaningful benefits of the collective is consistency. When the same photographer documents every milestone, the images grow together in a way that feels intentional and unified. The color, the light, the warmth of the studio environment, the comfort your baby develops with the camera over time. It all compounds into something that a single session simply cannot achieve on its own.
For Collective members, every signature session includes complimentary professional hair and makeup, which is one of our favorite ways to care for the mamas in the room. The postpartum season is a season of becoming, and we believe every mother deserves to walk into her baby’s milestone sessions feeling pampered, confident, and completely herself. The Client Wardrobe is also available for every signature session, offering beautifully curated wardrobe options so that choosing what to wear never becomes a source of stress.
Every session in the collective is photographed with the artwork in mind from the very first frame, which means the final album is not assembled at the end as an afterthought. It is built across three sessions with intention and care, resulting in something truly unified and extraordinary.
Our Baby’s First Year Collective sessions are photographed in our Athens, Georgia, studio, where our approach as an Athens baby photographer is centered around creating a sanctuary rather than a set. The light is carefully considered. The environment is warm and calm. Babies settle here, and families exhale here, and that quality of ease shows up in every image we make.

For sitter-stage babies in particular, the studio environment matters. Babies at this milestone are alert and curious and easily overstimulated by too much novelty. Our studio offers a calm, controlled setting that allows us to move through the session at the baby’s pace, responding to their mood and energy rather than pushing against it. The result is imagery that captures who your baby actually is at this stage, not a version of them performing for a camera in an unfamiliar space.
We also love that our studio is entirely dog-friendly. If your family has a four-legged member, bring them. Some of the most beautiful and emotionally resonant images we have ever made have included a family’s pet, and Max’s session is a perfect example of why.
Every milestone we photograph in the Baby’s First Year Collective moves toward the same destination: a fine art album that tells the complete first-year story in one beautifully crafted volume. Artwork is not an optional addition at the end of the process. It is the entire point of everything we do, and it is built into the collective experience from the very beginning.

We guide every family through a custom heirloom design experience after each session, so the process never feels overwhelming and no decision is ever made alone. We are not only photographers but designers, creative directors, and art curators, and we bring that expertise to every album we create. Our fine art albums are hand-crafted by a small, family-owned lab right here in the United States, using archival photographic printing processes on fine art papers that produce continuous tones and true-to-life color designed to last across generations.
Max’s completed Baby’s First Year album holds every chapter: the sleepy newborn wrapped in studio warmth, this sitter session full of expression, personality, and one very good dog, and his one-year celebration. Together, these images tell a story that is entirely his own, preserved as artwork that his family can hold, display, and pass down for as long as they choose.
If you are expecting or have recently welcomed a baby and are thinking about how to document this first year in a way that is truly complete, we would love to talk. The Baby’s First Year Collective is one of the most intentional and full-service offerings we have, and it is designed to honor every stage of your baby’s first year with the care and artistry it deserves.

A sitter session is a studio portrait milestone photographed once your baby can sit independently, typically between six and eight months of age. It is the session in our Baby’s First Year Collective capturing the stage where your baby’s personality and curiosity really begin to shine. We recommend reaching out to schedule this session as soon as your baby is showing signs of independent sitting so we can reserve a date that works beautifully for their development.
Every signature Collective session includes complimentary professional hair and makeup for mom, access to our Client Wardrobe, and a full studio experience photographed with the final artwork in mind. Sessions cover 3-4 key milestones of the first year: maternity, the newborn session, the sitter session, and the one-year celebration. Each session is designed to build toward a unified fine art album that tells the complete story of your baby’s first year as a beautifully crafted heirloom.

Absolutely, and we love when families bring their pets. Dogs are family members and they belong in these portraits. Our studio is fully set up to welcome four-legged guests, and some of our most meaningful and joyful images have included a family’s dog alongside their baby. If you have a pet you would like to include, let us know when you inquire and we will make sure everything is ready for them.
After every session in the Baby’s First Year Collective, we guide you through a custom heirloom design experience. We are not only photographers but designers, creative directors, and art curators, and we consider the design of your album to be one of the most important parts of the entire process. Our fine art albums are hand-crafted by a family-owned lab in the United States using archival photographic printing on fine art papers, with continuous tones and true-to-life color that last across generations. You are guided through every decision with care, and nothing is left to feel overwhelming or uncertain.
