The newborn season passes more quickly than most families are prepared for. Those first weeks, when a baby is still curled and soft and so entirely new to the world, are among the most fleeting chapters a family will ever live through. It is also one of the most worth preserving. Not just with a photograph, but with imagery created with so much intention and care that the end result is artwork your family will hold, display, and treasure long after this season has given way to the next one.
August’s newborn session was everything we love about this work. He arrived in the studio in those precious early weeks, and from the very first frame, we were creating with a complete year of his story in mind. August is a Baby’s First Year Collective member, which means his newborn session was not a standalone appointment. It was the next chapter in a carefully crafted visual journey that began with maternity and will continue through sitter and one-year milestones. Every creative decision made in the studio that day was made with that full story as the destination.
August’s story began before he arrived, with a beautiful maternity session that we documented here in Athens. See more from August’s Athens maternity session.

Newborns change within days. The particular way a baby tucks their knees toward their chest, the way they fit so completely in a parent’s arms, the softness and the stillness of those first weeks. None of it lasts. It transforms quietly and quickly, and before most families have fully caught their breath from the birth, the newborn they brought home has already become something slightly different and entirely new.
We believe this season deserves to be documented with the same level of artistry and intention we bring to a wedding day or an editorial portrait session. Because the images from a newborn session are not just photographs of a baby. They are a record of a family at the very beginning of something profound. They show who a mother was in this moment, how a father held his child for the first time, what the very first chapter of this particular life looked like. That is a story worth telling beautifully.
A photographer who creates artwork photographs differently than one who simply documents events. Every frame we made during August’s newborn session was considered with a cohesive visual story in mind, crafted and curated with care so that the end result preserves not only how August looked in those early weeks, but how it felt to be his family in that extraordinary, tender season of life.

One of the things that makes a newborn session at Izzy + Co different is that we arrive with the finished artwork already in mind. We are not simply photographing August and then figuring out later what to do with the images. We are designing his album from the moment we walk into the studio. The wardrobe choices, the light, the tones, the feeling of the session, all of it is considered in the context of the larger story we are building together as part of his Baby’s First Year Collective.
This is what it means to photograph for artwork. It means the images work together as a collection. It means there is a visual language established in the newborn session that carries through to the sitter session and the one-year session so that when the full year is complete and the album is designed, the imagery flows as one beautifully unified body of work rather than four separate galleries that happen to feature the same child.
For August’s family, that intentionality was present from the very beginning, and it shows in every image from this session. The newborn photographs feel like the opening chapter of a story that is already being written with the ending in mind. That is exactly what they are.

Our Athens studio is designed entirely around the comfort of mother and baby. A newborn session is an experience as much as it is a portrait appointment, and we approach every detail with the full-service care that defines Izzy + Co.
Before your session, we’ll meet for a wardrobe styling appointment to plan what everyone will wear. Moms have access to our curated Client Wardrobe, filled with beautiful, camera-ready pieces selected specifically for motherhood and family portraits. We’ll coordinate the rest of the family around your look so that everything feels cohesive, elevated, and completely taken care of.
On the day of your Signature Newborn Session, professional hair and makeup is included for Mom. Those early postpartum weeks can feel like a whirlwind, so instead of worrying about what to wear, doing your hair, or whether everyone will photograph well together, you can simply arrive and let us take care of you.
Once we begin photographing, we work slowly and gently, following your baby’s lead. There is plenty of time for feeding, soothing, cuddling, and all of the quiet moments that naturally unfold. We’re watching for those moments, too—the way August settled into his mother’s arms, the tiny details his parents will want to remember, and the way they looked at him when they thought no one was watching.
Those are often the photographs that become the heart of an album or a favorite piece of framed artwork at home. And after the session, we’ll help you through that part, too. At your Reveal, we’ll look through the portraits together and design the artwork that will preserve this season of your family’s story long after your baby isn’t quite so tiny anymore.

August’s newborn session is the second of four milestone sessions, following maternity and leading into sitter and one year sessions. The Collective follows a family through maternity, newborn, sitter, and one year, with each session designed to build naturally on the one before it.
What makes the Collective so meaningful is the consistency it creates across an entire first year of life. The same photographer, the same studio, the same visual language and artistic approach, present at every milestone. As families return for later milestones, the familiarity of the studio and the relationship built across sessions can create a sense of ease that is visible in the imagery. By the time his one-year session is complete, his family will have a collection of imagery that tells a complete and cohesive story, from the anticipation of the maternity season all the way through the joy of a first birthday.
Working with the same photographer across every milestone also creates a relational continuity that shows in the images in ways that are difficult to articulate but immediately visible when you see the photographs. There is a warmth and ease in a session with a photographer your family trusts and knows, and that ease translates into imagery that feels genuine and deeply personal rather than posed or performative.

Every session we photograph at Izzy + Co is created with the finished artwork in mind. For August’s family, that means a complete Baby’s First Year album at the end of the Collective experience, a fully custom, hand-crafted heirloom that tells the story of his entire first year in one beautifully designed volume.
We are not only photographers but also expert designers, creative directors, and art curators. We guide our families through every decision in the artwork design process, from image selection to layout to cover customization, with the same care and intention we bring to every session we photograph. A family is never left to navigate those decisions alone. We are there for every step.
Our fine art albums are hand-crafted by a small, family-owned lab right here in the United States. Nothing is mass-produced. Every album is built with the same attention and craftsmanship that went into creating the images inside it. Our professional labs use archival photographic printing processes on fine art papers, producing continuous tones and true-to-life color designed to last across generations. Consumer labs use press printing processes where images are made up of tiny dots that simulate color and are designed for high-volume, cost-effective production. The difference is visible the moment you hold a finished album in your hands, and it is the difference between something beautiful and something that truly endures.
When August’s Baby’s First Year Collective is complete, his finished album will become that kind of enduring object. A record of his first year, created with intention from the very first newborn frame, preserved in a form his family can hold, display, and someday place in his hands so he can understand what it meant that someone cared enough to document this season of his life so beautifully.

If you are expecting a baby or are in the early newborn weeks and you are drawn to the idea of documenting this first year with intention, consistency, and artwork as the end goal, we would be honored to talk with you about the Baby’s First Year Collective at Izzy + Co.
Our Athens studio is where we do some of our most meaningful portrait work, and the newborn season is one of the chapters we feel most privileged to be trusted with. This first year passes faster than anyone warns you it will. Let us help you preserve every part of it as the heirloom artwork it deserves to become.

We recommend scheduling your newborn session during the first two weeks of life, when babies are still in that deeply sleepy, curled newborn stage that makes for the most tender and timeless imagery. The ideal window is between five and fourteen days after birth. We encourage families to book their newborn session before the baby arrives so that we can hold a spot in our calendar for when the time comes. If your baby has already arrived and you are past that early window, reach out anyway and we will talk through what a session could look like for your family.
Our Signature newborn sessions include complimentary professional hair and makeup for the mother, access to our client wardrobe, and a fully guided studio experience designed around the comfort of both the mother and baby. We work slowly and without rushing, following the baby’s lead throughout the session. After the session, we guide families through a custom artwork design experience so that the images become the heirloom they deserve to be.

The Baby’s First Year Collective is a curated portrait experience that follows a family through four milestone sessions: maternity, newborn, sitter, and one year. The newborn session is the second of four milestone sessions, following maternity and leading into sitter and one year sessions. Working with the same photographer across all four milestones creates a cohesive collection of imagery that tells a complete and beautifully unified story of an entire first year of life, designed from the very beginning to become heirloom artwork.
When a photographer approaches a newborn session with the finished artwork already in mind, every creative decision changes. The wardrobe, the light, the tones, the way each frame is composed all serve a larger visual story rather than existing as individual images. At Izzy + Co, we design the album before we pick up the camera, and that perspective shapes everything we create in the studio. The result is a collection of images that works together as a cohesive body of work and translates naturally into the custom fine art album that is always the end goal of everything we do.
