When choosing a style of newborn photography, there are two main options. There is the very posed kind of newborn photos, that are often shot in a studio, and there are lifestyle newborn sessions. As a photographer, I shoot lifestyle newborn sessions. These are sessions that are more relaxed and take place in your home. These sessions are focused on the connection and love of the family and allow me to photograph the tender moments. By shooting at home, both the parents and newborn are more comfortable! I often get asked what the difference is between lifestyle newborn sessions and studio sessions, so I have made a FAQ list!
These sessions take place at your home and nursery. We can shoot around your house, and in the nursery, so we can get images of the baby’s space. Rather than posed newborn shots, these focus on the relationship between newborn and parents and family.
One of the biggest reasons is the comfort. Mom and baby will be more comfortable in their own surroundings, instead of a bright studio. It also allows for the much-needed breaks and lets you feed, change, and clean your baby in your own home. This also allows us to shoot images on the bed, cuddling around the house, and you can even include pets and siblings!
During your session, I recommend having a white noise machine on hand, to help keep the baby calm and relaxed. Heating pads also work great. And don’t worry if the baby is awake or sleeping, we can get cute pictures no matter what! Collect your favorite nursing pillows, blankets, and swaddles, so we can capture some pictures of the baby alone. If there are siblings to photograph with as well, I recommend doing those first, so we can focus on the parents and baby after.
I recommend solids and neutrals for you, and your family. Neutrals allow the focus to be on the newborn and allow you to display the images all year round. I love soft blues, grays and tans. I also recommend picking colors that compliment your home, since the session will take place mostly indoors. Also, pick clothing you feel comfortable in. If you are comfortable, it will show in the pictures! For your newborn, choose a few outfits (just in case of an accident!). Softly patterned swaddles also make for beautiful pictures, that are simple and timeless.
