Savannah is such a magical city – with its oak-lined cobblestone streets, fountain-filled squares, and endless Spanish moss. It’s no wonder it’s a popular spot to elope! After photographing a countless number of weddings and elopements in Savannah, I wanted to share my Top 5 Squares to Elope in Savannah! These are not just my favorite spots because of their beauty – but they also have some unique touches that my couples love! Whether you are looking for a laid-back spot to say I Do, or a more elegant ceremony, you will fall in love with Savannah!
One of the most iconic squares in Savannah, Whitefield square is a popular choice for an elopement! The center features a stunning white gazebo, that makes the perfect ceremony spot. Named to honor Reverend George Whitefield, founder of the Bethesda Orphanage, it was designed in 1851. So there it’s not just beautiful – but has so much history! Think of how many couples have said I Do, right on the steps of the gazebo! Just a few months ago, Chrissy and Deepak chose Whitefield Square for their Elopement, so make sure to check out their wedding to see all the cute pictures!
Located on Barnard and President Street, Telfair Square is close to Broughton St and the river, and steps away from the nightlife. I love this square because cars can’t park on it – so you don’t have to worry about cars in the backdrop of your photos! Often times, couples don’t realize that you can park around the squares. So they get disappointed when they see all the cars. But, at Telfair Square, you don’t have to worry about that at all! Plus, it’s right by the Telfair Museum of Art and Jepson Center For The Arts, so we have a ton of awesome backdrops to play with for your portraits.
While Forsyth isn’t a square – it’s the center of Savannah, and the most iconic spot you can find! While the fountain is super popular – it is also packed with tourists all year round. That’s why I recommend using one of the many sidewalks that come off the fountain! There are countless oak trees to choose from, and you will have a lot more privacy vs. standing in front of the fountain. It can be really hard to get tourists to give you some space – so finding a quiet little corner makes all the difference. It also allows you to have a more intimate ceremony, without the hustle and bustle. With 30 acres to chose from, I promise we will find the perfect spot.
Did you know there is a garden within Forsyth Park? This little hidden gem is one of Savannah’s best-kept secrets! The Fragrance Garden is tucked inside Forsyth Park, this intimate garden has countless flowers, and is the perfect elopement spot. The entrance to the garden is enhanced by beautiful iron gates from the Old Union Station. The garden has limited hours, Monday through Friday until 2:00PM, so while we can’t use it on the weekend, it is perfect for a weekday elopement.
With the Cathedral of St. John The Baptist in the background, Lafayette is always a beautiful spot to elope. It’s one of the most central and accessible squares Downtown, so it’s also the perfect spot if you have guests staying in hotels Downtown. You are a 5-minute walk to Forysth, and a 5-minute walk to River Steet! But, since it is off of Bull St, you get a lot more privacy. Couples love the fountain in the center, that makes a beautiful ceremony backdrop. It’s also the perfect square for portraits, since it is often less crowded.
With so many options to chose from, it can be difficult to pick the perfect square! This is why as an elopement and wedding photographer, I love to work with my clients to find the perfect spot. We can talk through your vision, and I can help you pick the right square for your elopement!
